it was friday morn when we set sail

[ It's an exciting career, piracy. Danger, adventure, freedom – and always something new. Ignis likes to keep things fresh, likes to keep himself, his crew, and above all his competitors on their toes, and it's to that end that he'd hatched his latest plot. A new captain of a new ship bragging far and wide about the vast quantity of precious jewels he'd come by might not have been much cause for concern – after all, Ignis himself is no stranger to a certain amount of showmanship – if said captain hadn't been quite so persistent in his pursuit of Coctura, woman of culture and captain of the Mother of Pearl. She'd bemoaned it to Ignis over a copious amount of very fine brandy when last they'd met, and come by the idea of parting the man from his jewels by.way of provoking a mutiny among his men. Ignis would talk his way onto the ship to agitate, and then Coctura would lead both her crew and his to loot the cargo in the ensuing chaos.

It hadn't worked. The evidence of this is currently clearest in Ignis himself, who'd managed to talk his way out of a keel-hauling and been put to sea in a rickety old dinghy instead with nothing but his own clothing and jewelry and one short knife – ostensibly to allow him to catch food, but more truthfully as an escape if the thought of dying adrift, taken by thirst or hunger, became too much to bear.

Ignis, however, is not a man who gives up easily. The sparse little island he's spotted dosn't look close to big enough to make a life on, but it's more than big enough to build a signal fire and tide him over until his crew comes looking. So he's in good spirits as he makes for it, singing loudly to himself as he rows. ]

O, auburn was the colour of his hair
and his eyes were blue, and his cheeks were fair
and his lips were of a ruby fine
ten thousand times they've met with mine -

[ It's full-throated and spirited, until he's so caught up in his song and the hope born of spotting the island that he forgets to check the patterns of the water, and rows himself right over a rock jagged enough to rip a hole in the bottom of his boat. It starts to take on water immediately, and at a rapid enough rate that he knows he can't possibly make it to land before the entire thing sinks. In truth, even this isn't enough to dampen his spirits – he was a sailor before he was a pirate, and neither is a career any sane man would take to without being a strong swimmer -

until he sees the fin of a shark cutting through the water towards him. ]

Oh, fucking hell.

[ ... it's the first time noctis has ever been winked at, and he's half-tempted to ask if the human has something in his eye.

but! instead, he reaches out to take ignis' other hand so that he can steady them, rolling over onto his back and letting his fin do the work of starting to pull them towards the island. it's a leisurely pace for him, enough to make sure that ignis doesn't get pulled under the waves, but still faster than a human could hope to accomplish on his own.

and since he now has a very captive audience for his curiosity -- ]

What were you singing about?

[personal profile] linkstrike 2018-09-09 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
[ he wrinkles his nose at that, confused. ]

Why would a human want to sing songs about drowning? Aren't you afraid of it?

[ well. when ignis puts it that way, noctis understands. his kind have songs like that, too -- sad songs about old stories or dreams, songs about beautiful things or songs about loves won and lost. and there are battle songs, but he's never liked those as much as the rest. ]

There's no magic in them. [ but... ] That doesn't make them bad, though. I like listening to them.

Especially when the person singing them has a nice voice.

[ noctis might not be entirely familiar with the ways of humans, but... as it turns out, their way of wooing isn't all that different from the kind of courtship he might expect from his own people. and the idea that this human is actually trying to hit on him is enough to make his brow furrow in confusion.

... humans are weird.

then again, he knew that. one more example of their oddities shouldn't be all that surprising. ]

I already told you, I don't like people dying in my water. [ but the corner of his mouth quirks up into a little lopsided grin as he says it. ] Your voice was just a bonus.

What does it matter to you?

[ with a raised eyebrow. ] Planning to steer clear from now on?

[personal profile] linkstrike 2018-09-10 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's not what I said.

[ with a little snort. ] I said I like hearing you sing. Does that sound like I want to get rid of you?

[personal profile] linkstrike 2018-09-10 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
[ too bad!! because noctis is familiar enough with the current to know when he's close to land, even without having to look. so he lets go of the other man's hands without warning, twisting away and lapping another lazy circle around him again. ]

Bugger off...

[ it's a new one, and he tests the sound of the words on his tongue. ] Like go away?

I didn't think humans liked to be alone.

[ and ignis' current position affords him more to see, so noctis swims closer, eyeing the length of him. ] It never seems to go that well for you.
linkstrike: (pic#12032409)

[personal profile] linkstrike 2018-09-17 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Must be nice. Getting to pick and choose whether you'd like to be lonely or not.

[ but the words come with no real grudge -- he's preoccupied with prodding at the soles of ignis' boots, wondering how such peculiar fins help to transition him from land to water. ]

[personal profile] linkstrike 2018-09-17 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
[ the answer is yes, but noctis wrinkles his nose at the question. ]

Why would I want to?
linkstrike: (GaHcwkK)

[personal profile] linkstrike 2018-10-02 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ noctis squints at him, rolling the idea over in his head. it's not like he has anything to be afraid of -- he's stronger than one human on his own, and he can make a quick escape back into the sea if he needs to. and this might be the only chance he actually gets to talk with a human, to ask him about all the little curiosities he's collected during his observations. ]

I can sit in the shallows. [ and then his tail flicks the water almost playfully, sending a little arc of droplets over his head. ] On one condition.

[personal profile] linkstrike 2018-10-02 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
[ without even a moment of hesitation: ]

I want to see your feet.

[ DOES THE OCEAN HAVE??? FOOT FETISH-ESTS? ]
linkstrike: (GaHcwkK)

[personal profile] linkstrike 2018-10-02 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
[ hmm. are tails the same as feet? do humans think that showing each other their feet is... something intimate? is that why they keep them hidden all the time? so what does ignis think it means that noctis is letting him see his tail?

it's a lot to sort through, and he abandons it all the moment ignis sits and stretches his legs out in front of him.

noctis surges forward immediately, settling himself into the shallows and grabbing one of ignis' feet in his hands. his expression is nothing short of fascinated as he examines it, poking at the hard surface of the human's toenails and gently bending his toes. what are all these things for? ]

Feet are weird. [ but it's said with a touch of awe, almost as if it might be a compliment. and then he wiggles ignis' big toe, brow knitting with thought. ] What do you even use these things for?
linkstrike: (oRbNUUp)

[personal profile] linkstrike 2018-10-02 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ the toes spreading is met with a little sound of awe, and noctis notches his fingers between them as if he's startled not to find webbing there. ]

They're way smaller than fingers. Doesn't that make 'em harder to use?
